Deep within the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of rams.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind through the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day after day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning The shepherd boy story he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. Yet, one morning, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
